Amorphophallus bulbifer is one of the prettiest of the Voodoo Lilies, though does tend to be an inconsistent bloomer, only flowering initially when they are mature and then flowers may not appear some years.
When it does, the flower emits an unpleasant odour, but only for a few hours after opening.
The flower is rather like an upturned horn, off-white with a rose throat, out of which protrudes a large beige coloured spike that can only be called a phallus, because that's what it is.
If it is is fertilised, usually by the flies attracted to its pungent odour, bright red seeds form on this spadix.
The Voodoo Lily is easy to grow though they do prefer shade and shelter from winds. You can grow them in pots and bring them indoors over winter as they become dormant, but as long as you are in a frost free zone they are OK outdoors.
