Acer campestre or the Field Maple is a medium sized, bushy and round crowned tree with palmately lobed, mid green foliage in opposite pairs and thick, fissured and corky bark.
The yellowy-green flowers are produced in erect clusters at the same time as the new foliage starts to sprout and are insect pollinated. They mature to two-winged samaras.
They are popular as ornamental and shade trees in parks and can handle plenty of shade in their establishing years, though do like plenty of direct sun later when seeds are being produced.
Like all Maples, they provide rich colour in autumn.
