Nymphaea daubenyana is a tropical waterlily and the first ever hybrid of the genus, the result of a cross between Nymphaea micrantha and Nymphaea caerulea.
It occured in the water lily tank at Oxford Botanic Gardens in the mid 19th century under the stewardship of Professor Daubeny, though it is not recorded whether this was deliberate or an accident.
It has beautiful, pale blue petals, edged with a slightly deeper blue along with mid green pads that are sometimes speckled with a purplish/brown.
Good for smaller ponds and also an excellent choice for aquariums.
This is a viviparous plant in that the young plant arises at the junction of the leaf and its stalk. if it were separated from the parent plant and planted, it would form a new independent plant.
