Sanguisorba officinalis or Great Burnet is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial that is naturally found in amongst grasslands and on grassy banks where it helps stabilise against erosion.
It has attractive, mid green, pinnate leaves from which grow branched stems carrying terminal spikes of small fluffy flowers that can be either in shades of pink or red.
They grow into clumps, but can be a bit 'informal' unless controlled or supported.
Good in mixed borders and especially good in wildflower meadows.
