Alnus glutinosa is a fast growing but short lived tree that thrives in wet conditions.
This is an upright tree with one or more trunks. As it matures tends to develop an arch crown over and the branches to become less straight.
The glossy green leaves are round to obovate with a slightly serrated margin. In spring male and female catkins develop followed by cone like fruit. Within the cones are small winged seeds.
It is often grown in water logged areas with poor drainage. Black Alder will tolerate salty and windy conditions. It is also used to improve the quality of the soil due to its relationship with Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria.
Grown in wetlands, along water courses and swampy conditions.
