Astrophytum ornatum is the largest of the Astrophytum cactii and the easiest to grow.
It has 5 to 8 ribs on an emerald green body and sharp spines up to 2.5cms long. It is distinguished more by the fine, white chalky scales that are scattered over the body
It is a solitary, columnar form cactus that can twist as it ages and produces a truly beautiful, long lasting, pale lemon coloured flower during summer. It may however take a few years to get large enough to produce flowers - usually around 5-6 years minimum.
They can be grown outdoors in warmer parts of Australia or go very well as indoor plants in pots.
An excellent choice as your first cactus, being easy to grow, highly geometric and will reward with superb flowers eventually.
