Caryota mitis or the Fishtail Palm has a a clustering habit forming clumps up to 8 metres high.
Each trunk is approx. 150mm across and produces flowers for several seasons, starting from the top and moving downwards.
The leaves are mid green, bipinnate and distinctively triangular, rather like a fish tail.
The flowers are creamy white and the fruits are red/orange and 10 - 20mm long.
This is a useful palm that goes well in domestic settings, adding a tropical feel while being comfortable anywhere along the east coast of Australia.
