is a bulbous perennial originating in an area reaching from Europe to Western Asia and into North Africa.
The leaves are narrow and straplike and rising above these are tall flowers stems with an egg shaped umbel consisting of lots of tightly packed bell shaped flowers.
The flower heads are a green-cream colour when they emerge and gradually turn a deep mauve/ pink as they mature, the colour changes from top to bottom until eventually the flowerhead is a beautiful deep pink egg shape.
Like many allium, the leaves are unremarkable, the plants are grown for the spectacular flowers, to maximise the effect plant in groups.
With their very distinctive shapes they are a great addition to garden borders, as feature plants around a patio.
