Chamaedorea tepejilote is very attractive, being one of the taller members of its genus with a single trunk about 7.5 cm in diameter that reaches heights of 6.5m.
They can however grow in clumps on occasions.
Its striking feature is a green ringed trunk with whitish leaf base scars which look similar to bamboo culms, especially when they are planted en masse.
The mid green, pinnate leaves are up to 1.5m long, and around 1m wide.
These are shade lovers and the foliage will turn yellow if exposed to too much direct sun.
They make great potted palms for indoors and conservatories, being able to tolerate low humidity and drier soils better than many other potted palms.
