The pitchers of Nepenthe are modified leaf tendrils that have become hollowed out into a pitcher with its own lid over the mouth.
Beneath the lid are various nectar glands which attract ants and other insects to the plant.
The rime beneath the lid is extremely slippery causing the insects to fall into the liquid which partially fills the pitcher. Here, special glands produce a digestive fluid which dissolves the insects.
