Origanum vulgare 'Aureum' or Golden Oregano is an attractive and popular woody perennial herb that forms a dense and spreading clump.
Its main feature is it's glowing, golden foliage which is held aloft on wiry stems of broadly ovate shaped leaves that are fragrant when brushed past or crushed.
This is a low growing plant that makes a good groundcover and as a bonus in summer it produces pale pink terminal clusters of small, pretty flowers.
Golden Oregano also makes a great decorative ground cover which tolerates dry areas and full sun - smothering grass and weeds perfectly!
This variety is not as pungent as the species Origanum vulgare therefore making it more an ornamental plant than for pure culinary purposes. It does however still work its wonders when used in the kitchen.
