Cunila origanoides or Stonemint is a native of North America and is a perennial that grows to about 30cm in height.
This is a charming herb that goes well in herb gardens, borders, rockeries and pots and planters as it spills over with its lovely pale mauve flowers throughout summer.
It is a member of the mint family and shares much in physical characteristics being multi-branched, with wiry stems and clusters of small, fragrant flowers.
The leaves are also aromatic when brushed or crushed.
Those who cultivate this plant may observe 'frost flowers' during cold weather where watery sap which is pushed out of stem then cracks near the base becoming frozen in ribbon-like projections.
