Himalayacalamus portacus or Nepalese Blue Bamboo is an upright, tightly clumping bamboo that has delicately drooping, pale green leaves and greeny/blue canes covered with a white powder.
The new shoot sheaths are quite black and drop off as the culms grow to reveal nearly white new culms, which darken with age.
Multiple short branches grow from each node and the culms can reach up to five metres in height in perfect conditions though more normally only get to 3m.
It prefers cool temperate climates and is a perfect bamboo for a screen or hedge.
