Furcraea foetida or the Green Aloe is the largest species in this genus of perennial succulents that produces a rosette of very broad, sword shaped leaves.
Unlike many similar plants, the leaves are spineless.
They are very sculptural and quite spectacular in larger garden settings where you can get enough distance to enjoy their distinct shape.
During winter they produce fragrant panicles of bell-shaped flowers that are green with white centres - this can grow up to 9m in height and again create a spectacular sight.
These are a great choice for xeriscaping and other arid garden designs and also very good at filling difficult, stony or rocky areas where nothing else will grow.
There is a variegated variety, as illustrated here, that is even more spectacular - and you'll see the flower spike (growing in mid summer) that is taller than the two storey house. !!
