Rothmannia manganjae or Scented Bells is a small tree from Zimbabwe that grows to approximately 12 metres in height.
The leaves are narrowly elliptic and glossy green with a wavy edge. But this plant is grown for its flowers which are a delight to see and inhale the fragrance. In fact a tree in full bloom is a spectacular sight.
The creamy white, sweetly scented flowers are generally solitary, tubular in shape with a splayed opening revealing a red spotted petal ends, a deep yellow throat and prominent stamen.
After the flowers it produces edible fruit around 2-4 cm that are spherical and blackish when then ripen.
This is a plant for tropical or sub tropical environments though it has been grown successfully in more temperate regions like Sydney with some protection from harsh winds.
