Salvia greggii is attractive small evergreen shrub with a rounded habit. With its small leaves and long flowering season, it is a lovely addition to sunny garden borders, patios and containers.
There are many hybrids and cultivars of this species. The leaves are covered tiny hairs and vary in colour from grey-green to mid green. There are glands on the underside of the leaves that release a strong aroma when touched. The flower colours vary greatly too and include whites, pinks, reds and purples so you will always find a colour you like.
The common name Autumn Sage is rather misleading as flowers are produced for all of summer and autumn with occasional spot flowering the rest of the year. The flowers are typical Saliva flowers with a corolla tube and two lips, the upper lip forms a hood and the lower lip broad and spreading. The upper lips tends to be slightly hairy and often a darker colour than the lower lip and lobe leading to a huge variety of extremely pretty two tone flowers.
Salvia are a great choice for your garden beds. They don't have any sharp prickles the leaves and stems give off a wonderful fragrance when touched. They have a long flowering period and will tolerate the occasional drought or deluge. However they will not tolerate poorly drained soil or being planted in an area in little or no air flow.
Salvia greggii tolerates hot and humid summers.
