Salvia viridis is one of my favourite Salvia with it long lasting brightly coloured bracts at the top of each stem. The plant is native to areas around the Mediterranean. This is a low growing and erect plant usually grown as an annual. It adds colour and interest to borders, patios and garden pots throughout summer and autumn.
Small mid-green, oval to oblong leaves grow along the stems that are topped with brightly colour bracts. Hidden by the bracts (either pink or purple) are tiny little two lipped flowers. They are white in colour with a tinge of pink or purple matching the bracts above.
These Salvia species will tolerate heat and humidity so grow well in climates similar to Sydney's. Despite being tolerant of humidity it is important to ensure there is good air circulation around the plant.
