Eucharis amazonica is a bulbous perennial from the rainforests of South America. It has a clumping habit and grows best in the warm humid conditions of the tropics and sub tropics. It prefers dappled shade and grows well under trees. It will tolerate full shade but will flower less. A great choice for those shade areas of your tropical garden.
The dark green leaves grow at the base of the plant, they are broad and paddled shape. From the centre of the leaf base grows a tall flower stem that bears an umbel of 3-6 pendulous flowers.
The flowers are perfumed and similar in shape to daffodils. They have a white and chartreuse green cup in the centre surround by 6 pure white petals. It is a truly beautiful flower and really rather elegant, hence the name 'Eucharis' meaning elegant.
