Hippeastrum papilio is commonly known as the Butterfly Amaryllis because the petals are said to resemble the wings of a Swallowtail Butterfly. It is an epiphyte and can be seen in the wild growing on the tree branches.
During late winter and spring tall flower spikes grow above the base of strappy leaves. The trumpet shaped flowers are quite magnificent, the white to apple-green petals have deep burgundy markings.
This attractive Hippeastrum will grow well in pots or planted directly in the soil providing the soil is well drained.
