Aechmea callichroma or the Urn Bromeliad produces a rosette of dark burgundy arching foliage with a toothed margin.
The foliage takes on this colour when exposed to bright light, but when kept in more shady conditions it will emerge greener overall.
It produces tall red spikes which bear inflorescence of bright red axes, and yellow floral bracts and sepals.
This is a recently registered species, though it may well have been cultivated for a long time under another name.
