Alluaudia procera is a very spiny succulent tree with few branches that grows like a bush to start with then elongates to become more tree-like as it ages.
They are covered with alternating spikes and rounded leaves on greyish, woody stems.
When mature these can make a spectacular sight when the new leaf growth is pale green and catches the light.
It is perhaps most easily described as being like a verdant 'crown of thorns'.
This plant is perhaps one of the best for tolerating drought, sometimes going a whole year without water when weather conditions demand in its native home.
Though from much warmer climates, it does well in Australian conditions, though can be deciduous in cooler weather.
A very healthy example can be found in Sydney Botanic Gardens.
Excellent for xeriscaping but also goes very well in larger pots and planters - especially against a white wall.
