Musa velutina is a dwarf perennial with typically large, veined, paddle-like leaves. It produces arching spikes of creamy yellow flowers in summer that are encased with pink bracts.
Musa velutina can be grown as an ornamental plant though it does produce edible fruits that are soft and sweet, though the seeds are relatively tough and can be a dental danger.
After they ripen the fruits split open thereby encouraging birds to spread their seeds.
The distinctive fruits are around 8cms long, dark pink in colour with a furry coating.
After flowering each stem (or pseudostem) will die back but the suckering roots will produce new stems.
Frost sensitive, it will die back in cold but frost free winters and re-grow as the weather warms up.
Suits a Mediterranean style or tropical garden.
Will produce fruits in its first season.
