Ruellia makoyana or the Trailing Velvet Plant is an low growing, soft-stemmed, shrubby perennial with narrow, lance-shaped, dark green and leaves with prominent pale green veins and a darker underside.
It produces very lovely purply-pink trumpet shaped flowers on slender stalks overwinter and on into springtime.
This plant likes to have plenty of light but ensure it is indirect, being well suited to the dappled light under tree canopies.
These are frost tender plants and shouldn't be left out in temperatures under 12c unless well protected.
When not in flower they provide attractive, velvety, white veined foliage to garden designs.
