Arbutus canariensis is a bushy, evergreen, small tree with scaly dark brown/grey bark and deep green serrated oblong leaves that are pointed at both ends.
It produces racemes of Lily of the Valley type flowers that are creamy white with a pink blush. The flowers arrive in late autumn and mature to clusters of strawberry like fruits that are rather knobbly in appearance.
These start green, turn yellow then orangey red - providing plenty of welcome colour in winter.
The bark is also an attractive feature being dark orange in colour most of the time, though it does turn to shades of purple in hotter months. The bark is smooth and will shed itself every year.
Fairly frost hardy, it grows well in coastal conditions and attracts birds to your garden.
These compact trees are often seen in parks and public gardens - being very ornamental.
