Overview
Castanea sativa or Sweet Chestnut trees are tall and elegant deciduous trees of pyramidal shape and with elliptical serrated edged green veined foliage.
In spring they produce clusters of catkins and in autumn they produce coarsely hairy fruits that contain shiny brown nuts - the sweet chestnuts we roast by the fire.
They prefer dry summers as they originate from the Mediterranean.
Soil: Deep and fertile soils with plenty of added humus.
Maintenance: Keep moist in winter and spring otherwise do not overwater.
Diseases: None of note.
Other Species: 12 species in all including C. dentata - the American Chestnut.
Comments: You'll need plenty of space and patience to grow a Sweet Chestnut - but autumns are all the better for the waiting.
