Overview
Bougainvillea glabra is a woody and thorn-stemmed, evergreen vine with glossy, dark green leaves, tiny white flowers and glorious magenta floral bracts. (N.B. the colourful parts are not the flowers)
Colours can be so strong they appear to vibrate.
It is rampant by nature and will cover a whole shed or large tree stump - but best trained over a trellis against a warm wall.
They will flower most of the year round in tropical regions and also do well in temperate areas as well.
Soil: Well drained, moist loamy soils are best.
They can withstand drought but are best watered around once every five to seven days in summer and less in winter. If your soil is slow draining then water once every ten to twelve days in summer.
These plants have powerful root systems so take care not to plant next to anything fragile and allow the roots to travel. If they are boxed in then pavers can be pushed up or tiles broken.
Maintenance: You can really neglect this plant if you want and it will still reward you with brilliant colour.
However better if trimmed back often to keep neat and do not overwater.
If you let it grow it will need support.
Propagate from cuttings in summer.
Diseases: Fungal and bacterial leaf spot disease.
Chlorosis causes foliage to yellow, caused by iron or magnesium deficiency - Epsom Salts will help it recover.
Other Species: 14 species in the Bouganvillea genus - Alba is the white version.
Comments: Named after the French navigator and explorer - Louis de Bougainville who charted the Pacific waters around Fiji and Tahiti.
Author: Bob Saunders.
