Overview
Hyacinthus x orientalis are bulbous perennials with the most marvellous and sometimes overpowering fragrance.
They have erect strap like glossy green foliage that surrounds the erect, central flower spike.
The flower heads are a mass of tubular splayed back flowers in a wide variety of colours.
They are best known as a pot plant but great also in the border where they should be planted 10 cms apart.
Although garden plants tend not to be affected by frosts some people have commented that they their Hyacinths in pots have be affected by frosts, so bring your pots inside during frosty times.
Soil: Well drained, friable, rich soils with lots of added humus.
They can also be grown suspended over water in special (hydroponic) hyacinth jars.
Maintenance: Plant in autumn in a dimly lit spot.
When the growth start move into brighter light.
Fertilise with a complete formulation when blooms first appear.
Let them dry out after blooming to allow the bulb to pull in some extra energy for use next spring.
Diseases: Slugs, snails, aphids, nematodes and bulb mites
Other Species: 3 species in the Hyacinthus genus in all - this one is the one which has been hybridised the most.
