Overview
Xerochrysum bracteatum - the Paper Daisy or Golden Everlasting is an erect perennial with thin green leaves and lovely golden yellow papery semi-double daisy like flowers held aloft on hollow stems.
The flowers can be up to 5-8cms in daimeter and are popular as florists flowers or in dried arrangements. The flowers are in fact quite small, all clustered in the centre with what looks like petals actually being bracts surrounding. It is the bracts that give the papery appearance.
It will tolerate light frosts but will not survive in zone 7 or lower winters.
This is the best known of the Paper Daisies as it is easily cultivated as either an annual or perennial. It can be quite prostrate or more upright and shrubby.
Soil: Fertile and well drained, but moist soils are best but will also grow on sandy and rocky soils.
Maintenance: Providing it is well drained keep up the water in hot weather, otherwise it will look after itself quite well.
An annual light trim of the perennial forms will keep them tight and more floriferous, while an annual feed with a slow release native formulated fertiliser will help keep blooms coming.
Propagates from seed very easily but named cultivars should only be propagated from cuttings - which is also very easy.
Diseases: Fusarium can be a problem if drainage is not good.
Other Species: 6 species in this genus. Many hybrids have been produced, either naturally or by man, most being annuals. Some of the most colourful have been created in Europe including yellows, reds, purples and oranges.
Comments: Previously classified as Helichrysum, then Bracteantha bracteata, now officially Xerochrysum bracteata.
