I have just planted 12 leighton green conifers along the backfence which faces west. Any suggestions for what type of small plants I could plant in front of these trees that would make them not look so bare? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Kate,
So if it's facing west then it would only get sun from after noon onwards (or maybe later). I'd suggest some smaller shrubs that don't need all day sun. Abelia comes to mind and there are a few varieties of these that when mixed will provide foliage variation, they also have flowers for good durations.
'Abelia grandiflora' and 'Abelia Francis Mason' are recommended.
They can grow up to a few metres in height, but also look good when kept lower.
Here's a link to the latter:-
