I have just planted a hedge of white sassanqua camellia in full sun. I have noticed that some of the leaves have black spots on them. I was wondering what might be causing this and if there is anything i should do to keep them well?
Camellia sassanqua cope well in full sun so it is unlikely to sunburn. It may be caused by Camellia or Tea Scale.
You need to look on the underside of the leaves, you are looking for small elongated brown scale between 1-2mm long. These are hard scale so cannot be treated with a systemic insecticide.
If there are not too many the scale then they can be scratched off with your fingers, but if there is a lot and it is possible then prune the infested part of plant and remove from your garden.
Pest Oils can be used but only at the mobile 'crawler' stage - they are very hard to see so apply Pest Oil every 2-3 weeks.
