I planted a big bag of daffodils back in early July and less then half flowered. Lots of foliage but not a lot of flowers. Any ideas what went wrong?
Hey Sharon, there are many reasons why you didn't get a full complement of flowers from your Daff bulbs.
#1. It may be better to plant a little earlier in May or June to give them best chance to get established.
#2. Did they get full sun? They need as much as possible e.g. 6-8 hours a day to perform to their best
#3. Too much nitrogen in your fertiliser will produce masses of foliage and little in the way of blooms. Try to ensure your NPK mix is 10/20/20 e.g. a lower amount of nitrogen.
#4. Planting them too close (crowding) will restrict each bulb's access to nutrients and restrict flowering potential.
#5. Poor quality bulbs purchased - sometimes bulbs are harvested too early, not allowing the foliage to die fully back. It is important to ensure the bulbs stock up on enough energy prior to sleeping over summer - they get this from sun on their leaves after flowering, so keeping them in the ground for a month or so will ensure they flower better next season.
