I am a new Australian and love it here, especially all the amazing native plants, many of which I am attempting to grow in my garden. But there is one icon of olde England that I really want to have there too and thats an old oak tree. Do they grow here OK and where can I get one?
Hey Ben, Oaks do grow well in Australia but unfortunately only in the colder climates. Terrigal is a bit on the warm side and also too close to the coast.
It may well be possible to grow an Oak but I fear if you get a tree to survive it will never do what it could in a cool area.
Also the autumn colour will be poor.
In NSW you'll probably have some success in the more elevated locations like the Blue Mountains, Central Highlands or Barrington Tops - better still as you go south.
If you can't manage without an Oak in your life then I'd suggest that Tasmania is a lovely place to live.
