i have an area by a shed that is very poor clay, it is exposed to all the winds especialy the hot northerly and strong easterly at times.
I want to plant some tall shrubs to hide the shed and act as a bit of a wind break, any ideas? (pref natives)
Hey Ali, sounds a tough challenge but there are ways to succeed.
#1. dig some good stuff into the soil - compost or peat or lucerne and add some gypsum to break up the clay.
#2. Then try a Pittosporum eugenoides or Pittosporum rhombifolium. You could also try Metrosideros excelsa (NZ christmas tree) or a Calistemon salignus (white bottlebrush). All but the last one are from NZ - hence why they are so hardy.
Here's a link to the Metrosideros which can handle the conditions AND have nice flowers in summers.
