Brunfelsia australis or Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow is a dense, evergreen shrub with small, glossy, purplish leaves and a rather twiggy form.
It comes into its own in spring when it becomes covered in flaring tubular flowers that start mauve/blue and fade to white - often with both colours on the plant at the same time.
Its an excellent coastal plant and the flowers are delightfully fragrant but the berries that follow can be poisonous to pets.
They make a good backdrop to a shrubbery or mixed border and as they can tolerate some shade, make a good specimen to go under trees, providing they get a decent amount of direct light as well.
