Aechmea macrochlamys is a bromeliad that comes from the tropical regions of Brazil.
The arching leaves grow in a rosette formation with a flowering spike from the centre.
The strap-like leaves are mid green and leathery with spines along the leaf margin.
The flowers and calyces of the flower spike are pink, the calyces lasting much longer than the flowers.
It looks very exotic, is easy to grow as it is quite hardy and also goes well in pots indoors.
Like many bromeliads it should not be allowed to dry out, but should always have water in the cup of the plant.
