Atriplex nummularia or Old Man Saltbush is the largest species of native Saltbush being an extremely hardy and sprawling, woody shrub that is ideal for planting in degraded areas like arid, excessively saline or alkaline soils.
This is a dioecious plant e.g. male and female flowers are produced on separate plants. Male flowers appear at the end of branches while female flowers grow along panicles in dense clusters of pinky green and are wind pollinated.
The slightly serrated foliage is quite attractive being a silvery grey green in colour, though the leaf shape will vary a lot, even on the same plant.
This is an extremely adaptable plant that is fire resistant, will help restore degraded land, be useful for foraging livestock, make a good hedge or windbreak and even makes excellent roadside plantings as the silvery foliage reflects well at night.
