Heliconia angusta is a very striking heliconia that resembles the Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) in its shape, though the colouring of red and white blooms is markedly different.
This clumping perennial has very dark green, upright foliage that resembles narrow, oblong banana leaves.
The small, white flowers are nestled in amongst spectacular upright spikes of red bracts, which remain for a good time after the flowers have faded.
It makes an excellent understory plant being able to take a mix of light and shade comfortably.
These make fabulous cut flowers, lasting for a long time while adding a strong graphical element to arrangements.
Although originating from tropical climes, it does well in temperate climates like more southerly parts of Australia.
N.B. although 'Red Christmas' is the most popular cultivar there are other colours and combinations available e.g. yellows and oranges.
