Overview
Alocasia micholitziana or the Green Velvet Taro is a striking rhozomatous plant most often grown in pots indoors, though it will happily grow outdoors in sub tropical and tropical climates.
It has almost arrow shaped foliage with thick creamy white veins on a velvety, dark green background.
Soil: Fast draining potting mix with plenty of Perlite added.
Maintenance: It likes to be kept warm and humid to thrive (18c - 24c or more).
Fertilise with a dilute liquid formulation every three to four weeks in summer.
Keep watered in summer but cut back watering over winter.
If grown outdoors the foliage may die back if its too cold, but the rhizome will prevail and new growth should appear next spring.
Re-pot every 2-3 years.
Propagate by division in spring.
Toxicity: While Alocasia is mildly toxic to humans, it can be very poisonous for dogs, cats, horses and other animals.
Every part of this plant from leaf to stems and roots are toxic since it contains insoluble oxalate crystals, similar to other plants in the Araceae family.
If the sap gets into eyes it may cause redness, pain, burning and swelling.
If any part of the plant is consumed the crystals released can irritate the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, causing discomfort to the throat, and burning pain to the stomach.
Treat with milk or icy poles - symptoms usually diminish over time naturally.
Other Species: Alocasia sanderiana, Alocasia nycteris, Alocasia sinuata, Alocasia zebrina, Alocasia heterophylla
Comments: As a result of over-collection this plant is now rare in the wild, though it has become a great favourite as a potted plant worldwide.
N.B. toxic to cats and dogs.
