Alloxylon pinnatum is a wonderful flowering tree native to the temperate rainforests of South Queensland and northern NSW.
It is a tall straight tree that in the wild can grow up to 30m high, however in gardens tends to not grow taller than 6m. The leaves are deep green, shiney and deeply divided. In summer a magnificent display of deep red ‘Waratah-like’ flowers are produced at the end of the branches.
This can be a difficult tree to grow outside its native regions. It doesn’t its roots disturbed, so plant while small in a well-drained spot protected from the wind and afternoon sun. More success may be achieved by planting a tree grafted onto roots of Alloxyllon flammeum
Alloxylon pinnatum is endangered in the wild because of habitat loss and environmental factors. Efforts are being made to protect certain rainforest population.
