Citrus x paradisi is an attractive rounded tree grown for its large yellow skinned sour fruit.
It has dense, dark green, glossy leaves and white flowers that turn to fruit ripening in late autumn to winter.
The grapefruit is hybrid of a sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and Citrus maxima. The first hybrids are believed to have occurred naturally in Barbados. It is now grown in warmer climates around the world.
The leaves are a deep green with a large winged petiole. The flowers grow singularly or in clusters and are white, stellate and fragrant.
The fruits make the best breakfast - the yellow grapefruit are quite sour and are best sprinkled with a little brown sugar or cinnammon. The pink grapefruit are much sweeter, they don't need and the juice makes a wonderful drink.
