Lavandula detata or French Lavender is a dense, low, evergreen, sub-shrub grown for the perfumed flowers and leaves.
It has grey/green, pubescent linear leaves with a notched margin. Both the leaves and flowers are very aromatic.
From late winter to early summer, flowers are borne on the end of upright stems, they are mauve to blue and tubular in shape and are surrounded by similar colour bracts.
Lavender is slightly frost hardy and will tolerate coastal conditions including wind. Grows best in low humidity, preferring a Mediterranean climate.
It will tolerate slight humidity providing there is good air circulation around the plant.
These will grow into medium bushy plants and make a good edge to a border or pathway, they also used as low hedging, in pots around patios and in herb gardens.
The flowers, when cut, will dry well to make pot pourri or just sprinkle into clothes drawers.
