Magnolia grandiflora is a magnificent, evergreen tree with a dome of dense, glossy, green, leathery leaves that are rusty tomentose underneath.
It bears fragrant, creamy/white, slightly scented cup-shaped flowers up to 30 cm in diameter in late summer and early autumn followed by red/brown cones.
It is notable for its very compact habit, with a narrowly pyramidal form that broadens with age.
Prefers full sun in the morning and protection from the harsh western sun. Once established will tolerate mild frosts and neglect but needs protection from very hot or cold winds.
It makes an excellent feature or shade tree.
