A hardy, single or multiple shaggy-trunked palm with attractive fan shaped fronds that are bluey green and very, very spiky.
It produces perfumed, creamy coloured flowers of both sexes in spring that are followed by shiny brown date-like berries.
Soil: Will adapt to most soil types - but prefers to have access to moisture.
Maintenance: Feed with balanced slow release fertiliser - prune off dead fronds close to the trunk - but take care of the spikes.
Other Species: The only species of this genus.
Comments: The only palm from Europe - except for a date palm from Crete.
