Syagrus romanzoffiana or the Cocos Palm is a slender, medium to tall, evergreen palm with smooth, grey trunk and crown and arching, plume-like, shiny foliage up to 4m long that drops cleanly when spent.
Creamy panicles of almost inconspicuous flowers are followed by fat edible orange fruits (dates) which are attractive to bats and insects.
Its best not to let them drop, however, as the sticky mess may attract unwanted fauna including fruit bats and self seed like crazy.
It can handle frost to -4c and will happily grow all along the East Coast of Australia from top to bottom.
