Bauhinia blakeana is a handsome and densely foliaged, evergreen tree that produces the most stunning and fragrant pinky/purple flowers in summer, autumn and early winter and unusually double lobed grey green foliage.
The large flowers look quite like orchids and completely cover the crown of the tree making for a big impact when in full bloom.
The flowers mature to long legume style pods which will hang on the tree for many months, looking a little untidy unless trimmed off.
It prefers warm climates, doesn't like cold winds or frosts and is the floral emblem for Hong Kong.
Growing up to 9 metres in height, it goes well as a street tree and in medium to larger gardens where it makes a strong feature.
