Overview
Nymphaea tropical hybrids are exotically unique plants with spectacular flowers - providing that you have enough water to keep them in.
The glossy, generally serrated edged foliage floats on the water surface and the many petalled and elegant flowers are held aloft, high above the waterline, sometimes up to 30cms.
There are day blooming and night blooming varieties, each adding a touch of tranquility to your garden
The first blooms may vary in colour to expectations, with the normal colour returning once established.
Soil: Compost rich soils 20-45 cms below the surface in broad pots or baskets 200-300mm wide. If your pond is deeper then place the pot on a stable rock or other elevated platform.
Line baskets with newspaper to keep the soil in. Plant your rhizome then firm down river sand and/or pebbles around the neck of the plant. The extra weight keeps the soil in place. Then immerse slowly, allowing the air bubbles to escape.
Ensure they get a good amount of direct sunshine, at least 4-5 hours minimum per day.
Maintenance: Keep in still water as movement may damage the foliage.
Fertilise with slow release fertiliser tablets during the growing season - do not feed in winter.
Re-pot every few years (in spring) - the more room they have, the more flowers you will get.
Diseases: Goldfish will eat most pests that can worry these plants. If attacked by aphids don't spray as it may harm any fish you have.
Other Species: Then Nymphaea genus has about 35 species, all water lilies, ranging from miniatures to large growing types
Comments: Named after Nymphe, the Greek goddess.
Many of the tropical Nymphaea illustrated here are hybrids from the collection of Charles Winch of Baulkham Hills, Sydney, a reknowned breeder.
