Tricyrtis hirta or The Toad Lily is a rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial that bears gorgeous star shaped flowers that are pinkish-white with purple spots.
The heart shaped leaves are hairy, as are the zig-zagging stems, and the flower heads are borne in loose clusters or singly in the leaf axils.
This plant is very hardy in cold conditions and loves the shade.
This plant is less cultivated than it should be, being a versatile and very attractive addition to shady borders. It is perhaps its common name that holds it back - so gardeners, come on, give it a go.
