This tall stemed Aloe is native to South Africa.
Aloe ferox has an unbranched trunk on top of which sits a rosette of thick succulent, blue green leaves with a spiny surface and red brown spines along the margins.
As the leaves die they remain attached to the trunk, these can be removed or left attached giving the trunk a shaggy look.
In Spring a huge branched flowering stem is produced terminal racemes of orange-red tubular flowers.
As with so many of the Aloe they need a lot of space and are not suitable for small areas. However if you do have space they can make a great feature plant.
