David Austin Roses are one of the most sought-after of the modern hybrid English Roses. They are distinguished by their very elegant cupped flowers of medium size which are often complex and ruffled, redolent of the Old Garden roses in looks.
The growth is upright but bushy and very vigorous, with shiny, pale green, disease-resistant leaves.
Most varieties within this group are strongly fragrant, adding to their attraction.
It is without doubt an absolutely splendid rose group in every respect, though they can become leggy (straggly) and grow rather tall in warmer climates.
Soil: Rich loamy soil with good drainage yet moisture retentive and slightly acid with a good topping of mulch to around 3-5cms depth.
Add well rotted compost before planting.
Maintenance: Trim to encourage new growth and deadhead when required to encourage further blooming.
Spray for diseases and water regularly and deeply.
Feed with blood and bone or a specially formulated, sustained release rose fertiliser two or three times a year.
Essentially the more you feed them, the more blooms you'll get - roses are gross feeders so don't underplant.
Diseases: David Austin Roses are generally quite disease resistant though mildew and blackspot can be problems.
Other Species: 150 species and many thousands of hybrids.
- 'Graham Thomas' was awarded 'The World's Favourite Rose' in 2009 at Vancouver World Rose Convention one of David Austin's best.
- 'Constance Spry' was the very first rose bred by David Austin in 1961.
Comments: An award winning example is the yellow rose 'Graham Thomas' which has a fresh Tea Rose fragrance with a cool character typical of its colour group. Introduced in 1983 - its namesake, Graham Stuart Thomas, was a celebrated rose specialists.
David Austin Rose are part of the Shrub Rose modern hybrid group which has many other subgroups from great rose breeders in France, UK and Germany. These include Delbard from France, Generosa from the famous French breeders Roseraie Guillot, Harkness from England, Kordes from Germany
