Sequoiadendron giganteum or the Giant Redwood is generally regarded as the largest tree on earth.
Originating in California, the Redwoods (also include Sequoia sempervirens and Metasequoia glyptostroboides) are conifers that tend to live for very long periods, with Sequoiadendron gigantum by far the largest and longest living. One specimen has been estimated to be over 3,500 years old, making it one of the oldest living organisms too.
the giant Redwood has soft and reddish-brown bark and short awl-shaped foliage that is arranged spirally on shoots. Cones are ovoid in shape.
It has a dense and conical crown
These are popular in cultivation, though tending more towards larger parks and gardens to accomodate their size. Though planting one requires much patience as they are not fast growers.
There are many cultivars available including a few more compact forms.
A good place to see them in Australia is at Ballarat or Hobart Botanic Gardens as well as the Pialligo Redwood Forest near Canberra.
